Middletown School Taxes Going Up As State Cuts Aid
Many homeowners expected and feared a property tax increase was coming as the state cut $550,000 from Middletown schools this year.
MIDDLETOWN, NJ — Middletown homeowners will be paying on average $86 more in school taxes as the Middletown Board of Education passed a $164-million budget Wednesday night, the Asbury Park Press reported.
Many Middletown homeowners both expected and feared a property tax increase was coming, as the state Department of Education, under Gov. Phil Murphy, significantly reduced the amount of state aid Middletown gets this year. Middletown saw a reduction in approximately $550,000 in state aid this year.
If the new budget is approved, then the typical home in Middletown, assessed at $444,180, would owe $5,828 in school taxes going forward. Township and county taxes have not been finalized.
