Mayor Perry said the Township Committee chose to invest in the hockey rink because, for many families, roller hockey is a more affordable alternative to ice hockey.

"Over the last few years there has been a reemergence of outdoor roller hockey in our area. Playing ice hockey can be cost-prohibitive for some families, so the Township would like to offer a free public option for residents," read this press release from the Township.

“There is a large and passionate hockey community here in Middletown, so we understand and appreciate the demand for an outdoor roller hockey rink,” said Perry. "It will be great to see people of all ages be able to enjoy it again.”

Middletown also plans to install new drainage and irrigation around the rink.

There are also potential plans to resurface the basketball and tennis courts at Normandy Park.

Perry said the goal is Normandy Park can support a variety of sports and age groups with fields, parking improvements and lighting within the same vicinity. The turf fields at Normandy are currently striped for soccer and baseball, while the fields at Nut Swamp are striped for soccer, lacrosse, field hockey and football.
