The Secret of Roan Inish

This simple, sumptuously naturalistic film...depicts in unhurried rich, damp tones the fable of a selkie, a creature of Celtic mythology that is half human, half seal. '

A young girl named Fiona is sent by her widower father from Dublin to the home of her grandparents  in a remote fishing village in Donegal. Fiona, who is 10, attracts the attention of seals, and a fantastical legend begins to unfold about how her infant brother was presumed drowned after a tiny boat in which he was nestled drifted out to sea.

The story delves into the folk tale of what happened to the child, and of a rekindling of unexpected hopes for the grandparents. It's a lyrical, lulling, beautiful film that children may relish.
