Millburn Residents To Vote On $20.5M Capital Plan For Schools

Residents of the township are expected to go to the polls in January, 2020 to vote on a bond for $20.5 million in school improvements.

MILLBURN, NJ — The Millburn Township Schools will hold a special election on Jan. 28, 2020 to ask voters to approve a $20.5 million bond to fund capital projects. The referendum is part of the district’s Capital and Maintenance Plan to improve its facilities while maintaining a flat debt schedule —by issuing new bonds as existing debt expires—according to a letter from Superintendent of Schools Dr. Christine Burton.

The intent is to "finance reinvestment in district schools without increasing taxes," the letter said. According to the letter, by financing through a bond referendum, taxpayers will benefit from state-funded debt service aid of up to 40 percent of the project costs.

The bond would fund renovations and new construction at all schools. The 2020 projects will include:

  • Security vestibules and safety upgrades at all schools;
  • Cafeteria addition at the Middle School;
  • Infrastructure improvements (window replacements/repairs, roof replacements, stair and masonry repairs) as needed across all schools
