Surgery Sidelines Stephen Colbert From ‘Late Show’ Hosting Duties

The Montclair resident will be recuperating for a week. But he hasn't lost his sense of humor about his recent health issue.

MONTCLAIR, NJ — Montclair’s own late night television host is taking a time out from “The Late Show” for a week due to a ruptured appendix. But he hasn't lost his sense of humor about the situation.

On Monday, Stephen Colbert announced that the show is being canceled this week as he recovers from surgery.

New episodes of the show were scheduled to air Tuesday, with a guest list including Patrick Stewart, Jennifer Garner and Kelsey Grammer.

Colbert – a longtime Montclair resident who has been an active supporter of the local arts scene and the annual Montclair Film Fest – took over as host, executive producer and writer of “The Late Show” in 2015.

“Sorry to say that I have to cancel our shows this week. I’m sure you’re thinking, ‘Turkey overdose, Steve? Gravy boat capsize?’ Actually, I’m recovering from surgery for a ruptured appendix. I’m grateful to my doctors for their care and to Evie and the kids for putting up with me. Going forward, all emails to my appendix will be handled by my pancreas.”
