IN SHORT

Montville had the lead going into the sixth, but surrendered one run to level the score at 2. Montville quickly answered back when Karl led off the bottom of the inning with a double. He later scored the decisive run on an infield single by Kelly. In the bottom of the sixth, the bottom four hitters went 4-for-4, scoring three runs while driving in four, including two on Mike Dellestritto’s triple.

“We just want to preach staying short through the baseball and taking the ball up the middle. We just want to have tough at bats and we want to compete. We know everyone on our team has that desire to compete and today the bottom of our order came up big.”—Head Coach Joseph Cardinale

MUSTANG OF THE GAME

Nolan Ehntholt—The junior pitcher went the distance. He gave up two earned runs and five hits while striking out three and walking three.

“Nolan is actually one of the more talented pitchers in the area. The problem is with the talent we have this year, he hasn’t had a chance to showcase that talent.  He’s had to stay patient and wait for his opportunity. Now that we have games almost every day, he’s going to get that chance he’s been waiting for.”—Cardinale

OTHER KEY PERFORMANCES

Ryan Karl went 3-for-3 with an RBI single in the first and a double in the second that sparked the Mustang rally.

Matt Kelly went 2-for-3 with two RBIs and a run scored. He drove in the eventual game-winning run with an infield single in Montville’s final turn at bat.

Mike Dellestritto went 1-for-3 with a triple and two RBIs that gave the Mustangs insurance runs.

COACH’S TAKE

“We had two tough county games on Saturday and Sunday and to come back on a Monday we really needed to be mentally tough. After the weekend we had, we could’ve very easily gone through the motions and it looked like we were for the first five innings. However, we were able to change our approach in that sixth inning and came out with the win against a tough team.”—Cardinale
