The Montville High School wrestling team saw four wrestlers place in the top three at Saturday’s Morris County Tournament held at Mount Olive High School.
Leading the way for Montville was senior 125-pounder Rob Glasser, who took home a county title by stopping Garrett Gotthelf of Mountain Lakes, 3-0.
Glasser was is control from the start as he recorded a takedown early in the first period. He would hold a 2-0 lead heading into the third period before escaping from the bottom position, making the score 3-0.

“I was just wrestling smart and calm,” Glasser said after winning the county title. “I felt in control the entire match, even though I only won by three. I felt good on top, got out on bottom. I knew it wasn’t going to be easy and I’ve worked hard since I started wrestling in my freshman year. I’m just working to be the best that I can be.”
Glasser’s road to the finals included wins over Dover’s Brian Chaparro, Delbarton’s Matt Albano and Christian Signorelli of Parsippany Hills.

“After I wrestled a couple of matches [today] it really got me loose,” he added, “I just felt good and I wrestled the way I know I can wrestle.”
Montville 285-pound senior Taylor Bernstein also took home a county title pinning Randolph’s Pete Wolmart in the second period.
Bernstein rolled to the finals on Saturday as he stopped Boonton’s Glen Brock, Jefferson’s Mo Fouad and Pequannock’s Mike Spencer –who Bernstein lost to in the MCT last season.
“I had a good win out there,” Bernstein said. “[Chaparro] was tough, but I caught him and got the pin. I was mostly looking forward to making it to the finals because last year I lost to [Spencer] and this year I was able to stop him 14-5 to get to the finals. I just wanted to do my best. [Chaparro] is a really good wrestler, he’s ranked like sixth in the state, so I just wanted to come out here and try to win. Whether I won or lost, I was going to be happy.”
At 130-pounds, senior Mike Polizzi finished in second place overall after dropping his finals match, 3-2, against Delbarton’s Jorge Lopez.
Polizzi -who said becoming Montville’s first ever two time county champion was his goal heading into the tournament- trailed 3-2 with time expiring in the third period. The senior came within inches of getting a takedown and sealing a county title, but was denied the two-points from the official as time ran out.
“Two time county champ,” Polizzi said. “We haven’t had one yet in Montville history and I wanted to do it and I’m pissed off that I didn’t get it. I should have made it more clear that I had control [at the end of the match]. The team wrestled great and everyone in my weight class is tough. I’m angry I didn’t win, but it’s only fuel to the fire.”
Also placing for Montville was sophomore Parker Meytrott who’s 9-0 decision win over Mendham’s Sam Button sealed a third place finish.
Delbarton would win the overall team title for the third straight year as they amassed 206 points, followed by Montville (160), Boonton (132), Pequannock (127) and Jefferson (124).
