Tennis Coach Praises Team After Sectional Finals Win

The No. 2 seeded Mustangs boys tennis team upset Tenafly on Monday.

At the beginning of the season, it was unclear how well the Mustangs boys tennis team would do, according to head coach Ken Sachs.

"I didn't expect some of the players to improve as much as they have," he said.

But on Monday they proved just how far they've come when they defeated No. 1 seeded Tenafly, 3-2, in the North 1 Group 3 finals.

"It's been unbelievable, their focus, they're wise beyond their years," said Sachs.

He praised all of the players: J.T. Mertz, Eric Young, Andrew Kim, the three singles players, and the doubles teams of Devon Fano and Jake Stathis and Alec Vigil and Dan Peski.

Sachs also mentioned that Matt Goldstein, one of the team's strongest performers, has been out for much of the season but will be returning for groups.

"I've learned never to count this team out...they really are mature, even though they are so young," Sachs said. "They play with conviction, they play with heart...I wouldn't want to be coaching any other team."

Mustangs tennis will begin competing in the group tournament this Thursday at 11 a.m. at Mercer County Park.

"We're running into some really powerful programs on Thursday; Moorestown, Millburn...we're going to be playing some top 20 teams in the state," said Sachs.
