Township Committee Amends General Recycling Order

Single stream recycling coming on March 1.

With Montville moving to single stream recycling as of March 1, the Township Committee passed an amendment revising the township’s general recycling order at its meeting on Tuesday.

“We’re going to single stream, and this will help us accomplish that,” Mayor Jim Sandham said at the meeting. “This is going to be a benefit for our town.”

The new general order defines comingled recycling as a combining of non-putrescible source-separated for recycling purposes, and lists the materials that may be comingled for recycling pickup, including newspaper, mixed paper, corrugated cardboard, aluminum cans, glass bottles, plastic plates and trays and tin cans.

The new general order also outlines the township’s goals for the new recycling program, which is to reach 50 percent recycling of municipal waste by 2015.

According to township administrator Frank Bastone, residents of the township can expect to receive some notification about the change in recycling from dual stream to single stream by the end of the month.

“We have drafted a letter explaining this new recycling program and we will be sending it out, along with sticker for recycling containers, sometime in the coming weeks,” he said.

The single stream recycling plan adopted by the township in the fall of 2010 will allow residents to combine all recycles into one bin for weekly pickup, as opposed to the township’s current dual stream pickup, in which paper and plastic are separated and collected on different days. Under the single stream recycling, the township is expected to save over $200,000.

Montville is the first township in Morris County to adopt the comingled single stream collection plan. The new collection will begin on March 1.
