Moorestown Resident Begs The Question: Why Hire Donald Trump?

MOORESTOWN, NJ — Moorestown resident Edwin Begg wonders why one would hire Donald Trump, given his track record as a businessman. Below is a letter to the editor Begg wrote on the subject:

To the Editor:

Many voted for Trump because they thought “he is a successful businessman?” Is he?

Trump led three Atlantic City casinos and one Manhattan hotel into bankruptcy. On the federal level, the Congressional Budget Office and Government Accounting Office forecast a 2019 deficit of $806 billion. Total debt climbs to $22.0 trillion. These numbers increase because of the new Congress-White House budget agreement. Successful businessmen make money.

Trump said trade wars are easy to win. United States Customs and Border Protection reports the tariff on Chinese imports is $20.8 billion, while $28 billion goes to compensate farmers for trade losses. There is no similar support for manufacturing companies.

Consumers lose because tariffs are part of the prices they pay. There is little or no evidence that American jobs are back. GDP just dropped from 3.1% to 2.1%. Businessmen are cutting investments. They don’t know what Trump is going to do next. Where is the win?

Large organizations, like the federal government, need experienced and talented people. Their selection is critical. How has Trump fared? Brookings Institution says there have been seven Communications Directors; four heads each of Homeland Security, Veterans Affairs and Health and Human Services; four National Security Advisers; three Secretaries of Defense; and three Press Secretaries. New Trump tweet: We are getting a new Director of National Intelligence. We have a record of chaos and incompetence.

Why hire Trump?
