Democrats Capture Seats, Shift Power On Moorestown Council

Nicole Gillespie and Brian Donnelly defeated Republicans Manny Delgado and Jamie Boren in Tuesday night's elections.

MOORESTOWN, NJ — The balance of power appears to have shifted in Moorestown, as the Democratic challengers have unseated the incumbent deputy mayor and his Republican running mate.

Democrats Nicole Gillespie and Brian Donnelly defeated Deputy Mayor Manny Delgado and Jamie Boren in Tuesday night's elections, according to unofficial vote totals posted by the Burlington County Clerk's Office.

Gillespie lead the way as the top vote-getter with 4,652 votes. Donnelly followed with 4,542 votes. Delgado had 3,885 votes, followed by Boren with 3,819 votes. There were five write-in votes among the 16,903 ballots cast in the local election.

"We are delighted that the voters of Moorestown put their confidence in us," the candidates told Patch in a text message Tuesday night. "We are delighted for the opportunity to make government in this town transparent."

Transparency was one of the main points Gillespie and Donnelly hit on in the debate last week at William Allen Middle School.

Results were slow to come in, as the Burlington County Clerk's website crashed on Election Night. Gillespie and Donnelly join Lisa Petriello to give Democrats a 3-2 advantage on Moorestown Council. Victoria Napolitano and Mike Locatell remain in office for the Republicans.

Delgado and Mayor Stacey Jordan were both up for re-election this year, but Jordan opted not to run for re-election. Read more here: Jordan 'Stepping Back,' Won't Seek Re-Election In Moorestown

Democrats did well in Moorestown and Burlington County as a whole. For much of the night, it appeared as though Republican incumbent Tom MacArthur would easily retain his Third Congressional District seat, based on results from Ocean County.

When results from Burlington County finally came in, the result became too close to call. Democrat Andy Kim defeated MacArthur by 19 percentage points in the county.Read more here: Republican MacArthur vs. Democrat Kim In NJ's Third: Too Close

Democrat Donald Norcross also fared well in Burlington County among First Congressional District voters. Only Republican Seth Grossman saw success, defeating Democrat Jeff Van Drew among county voters, although Van Drew eventually came out on top.
