Morristown High School's Fiddler on the Roof Scores with Audiences and Critics

Morristown, NJ—Morristown High School Theatre’s Fiddler on the Roof is a hit with both audiences and critics. The student-run production opened Thursday night to rave reviews and a standing ovation, and tickets are going fast for the remaining three performances, Friday, March 13, through Sunday, March 15.

MorristownGreen’s Kevin Coughlin called the show “a splendid spectacle” and a worthy successor to last year’s “triumph” with Les Misérables. Accordingly, ticket sales are approaching last year’s boffo numbers for Les Mis, making it imperative on theater fans who want to catch this production to get their tickets now.

Once the longest-running musical in Broadway history, Fiddler on the Roof is packed with comedy, pathos, great characters, and classic songs, including “Tradition,” “Matchmaker, Matchmaker,” “If I Were a Rich Man,” “To Life,” “Miracle of Miracles,” “Sunrise, Sunset,” and many more.

Based on Sholem Aleichem’s Tevye stories, Fiddler on the Roof tells the story of a Jewish family in the Pale of Settlement in Western Russia around the turn of the twentieth century, but its themes are universal and somehow more relevant with each passing year. The show is about the tensions between tradition and progress, isolation and assimilation, acceptance and persecution, and, most overtly, between parents’ love for their children and their need to let them go, to allow them to grow up and live their own lives and make their own decisions.

As faculty director Stephanie Rubin says, “At its core, Fiddler showcases the delicate balance between the stability of tradition and inevitable change that comes as time passes, offering a deeply human look at how we hold onto our identity in a shifting world.”

In his review, Coughlin haled the show’s cast, “mesmerizing choreography,” “joyous numbers,” and “timeless” themes, adding that MHS’s production makes it “clear why this musical is beloved by . . . everyone.”

MHS Theatre will stage three more performances of Fiddler on the Roof on the Morristown High School stage, including two evening performances and one matinee:
