Another North Jersey Diner Demolished: Here’s What’s Replacing It

MORRIS COUNTY, NJ — Another Garden State staple has been reduced to rubble as diners continue to disappear throughout New Jersey.

The West Side Diner, known for decades as the Summit West Diner, operated on Route 46 in Denville for around 40 years before its demolition over the holiday weekend.

In 2024, the space was purchased by the owners of Anchor Ace Hardware, who operated the neighboring hardware store on Route 46 in Denville.

An Anchor Ace Hardware statement said the decision to knock down the eatery brought “mixed emotions.”

“We’ve been sharing breakfast, lunch, and dinner with this community for over 40 years, and we truly appreciate the memories and support along the way,” a statement read. “The food business is not an easy one, especially the diner business. Just look around the state, and you can see how much the industry has changed. When we were presented with what felt like a once-in-a-generation opportunity to grow our business and better serve our community, it was something we simply could not pass up.”

Instead of the Silk-City-style diner the space once was, the area will be used to expand the Anchor Ace Hardware store and provide additional parking, according to representatives.

“Throughout this process, we have worked closely with both the community and the town to minimize any impact,” We understand that change can be concerning, but please know that we take our responsibility to this community and to our business very seriously.”

Regulars expressed mixed emotions about the diner’s closure on social media.

“Sad to see it go… Have many a wonderful breakfast memories at the West Side diner,” one user wrote. “Looking forward to a bigger and better Ace in the future.”

“Wow, what an incredible journey for Anchor Ace! The effort and dedication over the years have really paid off! Here's to many more years of serving the community,” wrote another.

The closure of the Denville staple comes as diners across North Jersey meet similar fates.

The Coach House Diner in Hackensack announced an abrupt closure in April after it was purchased by a car wash business.

The Stelton Restaurant, in Edison, will be replaced by a QuikCheck.

Hoboken’s Malibu Diner, which opened in 1941, is being replaced by a medical practice.

The Gotham City Diner in Ridgefield also closed its doors in March.
