Newark Sees 2nd Large Fire In 1 Week; 18 Companies Battle Blaze

Newark saw its second three-alarm blaze this week, which displaced a local family and left a firefighter with minor injuries.

NEWARK, NJ — Newark saw its second three-alarm blaze this week on Wednesday night, which left a local family without a home and a firefighter with minor injuries, authorities said. The fire took place on South 10th Street, a short walk from a separate blaze that displaced 11 people on Tuesday.

Newark firefighters arrived at 79 South 10th Street around 6:30 p.m. on Wednesday to find a two-story, wood-frame residential building in flames. In all, 18 fire companies responded to the three-alarm call, the Newark Department of Public Safety said.

Firefighters brought the fire under control at 9:33 p.m., authorities stated.

At least one family was displaced as a result of the fire. No residents suffered injuries, but a firefighter sustained “minor, non-life-threatening injuries” and was taken to University Hospital for treatment. He is listed in stable condition, authorities said Wednesday evening.

The Newark Fire Division’s Arson Unit is investigating the cause and origin of the blaze.
