NEWARK, NJ — A water main break in Newark caused lane closures on Broad Street prior to the Friday morning rush hour commute, authorities say.

According to the Newark Police Department, the main broke around 5 a.m. on Broad Street between South and Thomas, closing one lane of traffic. Motorists and pedestrians were advised to utilize alternative routes until the repairs are complete.

“Commuters should anticipate a disruption in service until the repairs are complete and the road reopened,” city officials stated in a release at 8:10 a.m. “The estimated time of completion is unknown at this time.”

Friday’s break comes three days after another break took place on South Street between Jefferson and Pacific Streets, causing a partial collapse of the road.
