Violations Found At Newark School Several Months Before Fire: Report

The alleged fire code violations were found during a routine inspection at Wilson Avenue School, a report says.

NEWARK, NJ — A Newark school that saw a fire the week before students return for a new academic year has also seen some fire code violations in its recent past, a report says.

TAPintoNewark reported that there were 279 fire code violations at 45 locations in the Newark Public School District between January and April. This included six at Wilson Avenue School, where a fire took place in an unoccupied classroom on Aug. 28.

The violations at Wilson Avenue School were required to be fixed by Feb. 17, TAPintoNewark reported, citing a Jan. 26 notice from the city’s fire prevention bureau.

“The findings from the fire inspector last (school) year had absolutely nothing to do with the fire at Wilson Avenue School this year,” a Newark district spokesperson told the publication. “In addition, none of the other code violations impact the health and safety of any of those schools, and all are being addressed.”

The first day of school for students in the Newark Public School District is Sept. 5.
