Robbery and Shooting Reported at Hope Manor Thursday

Injury is not life-threatening.

An unidentified man was shot at the Hope Manor Development early Thursday morning, after being robbed at gunpoint by a group of individuals.

Lt. J.T. Miller from the New Brunswick Police Department declined to release the victim's name, but said he was a 22-year-old male from Lawnside.

According to an email from the Rutgers Police department, the victim was walking through the development, located at the intersection of George Street and Remsen Avenue, just before 1 a.m. Thursday, when he was approached by a group of 8-10 males, who ordered him to give them money.

When he refused, a handgun was pointed at his face, and he was again told to hand over his money. After doing so and turning to run away, he was shot in the lower back.

The injury was not life-threatening, the report said, and the victim was treated at Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital.

Rutgers police issued a reminder to walk in groups, when possible, to remain aware of your surroundings, and to call 911 in the event of the emergency.

By law, Rutgers is required to send notifications to the college community of incidents happening in the vicinity of campus, Rutgers spokesperson E.J. Miranda said.
