Second Ward Neighborhood Block Club Changes Leadership

The New Brunswick's Second Ward Neighborhood Block Club has announced that 18-year president Morris Kafka has yielded leadership to newly elected president Maria Pellerano.

The change happened at the organization's Jan. 31 elections.

According to a release from the group, Pellerano is also a long-time resident of New Brunswick.

“I look forward to working with the block club over the next few years. The club has a long history of activism and community improvement. Our diverse membership works to enhance the quality of life in our neighborhoods and throughout the city," Pellerano said, in the release.

The club also voted in new vice president and co-secretary Phyllis Koenig, co-secretary Marge Kerber and treasurer Yana Hernandez.

Kafka is credited with building the organization into a known and respected community group in New Brunswick that works dilligently to improve the quality of life for New Brunswick residents.

“I am very moved by all of the kind words and acknowledgements. Remember that the founding members of this group were passionately committed and worked tirelessly for a better, safer, cleaner, and more beautiful New Brunswick.  These women and men welcomed me into the group while I was still a teen and taught me a great deal, including the need to balance our work with social and spiritual time.  I could not have done any of this alone," Kafka said in the release.

The Second Ward Block Club meets at 7 p.m. on the last Monday of each month at the New Brunswick Free Public Library, 60 Livingston Ave.
