Teen Sentenced in New Brunswick High Attack

The 17-year-old caught on videotape violently beating another student at New Brunswick High, causing him facial damage, has been sentenced.

New Brunswick, NJ - The 17-year-old junior caught on videotape violently beating and kicking another student at New Brunswick High School in March, causing him facial damage, has been sentenced to serve 60 days in the county’s youth detention center, the Middlesex County prosecutor announced Thursday.

The New Brunswick Police Department determined that he knocked the victim, 15, to the floor in a high school corridor on March 10, and repeatedly punched and kicked him. The victim sustained facial and dental injuries and a sprained collar bone as a result of the beating.

The family of the victim wanted the student expelled, but the New Brunswick school district refused to comment Thursday, citing the student's privacy.

"While we understand public concerns, the school district simply cannot comment on matters involving individual students," said Aubrey Johnson, superintendent of New Brunswick Public Schools in a statement.

The attacker, who will go unnamed as he is juvenile, was also ordered to serve a probationary term of two years. The 60-day term will be served at the Middlesex County Juvenile Detention Center in North Brunswick.

The judge placed the juvenile under house arrest and ordered him to report to the detention center on June 24 to begin serving his term.

In addition, he must pay restitution to the victim’s family, but the amount has yet to be determined by Superior Court Judge James Hyland.
