July is National Ice Cream Month

In honor of National Ice Cream Month which is celebrated each July, Patch got the "scoop" on some fun facts about our favorite frozen treat.

Did you grab a scoop on Sunday? If so, you might not have been aware that you were celebrating National Ice Cream Day, a part of the month long celebration. President Ronald Reagan declared July National Ice Cream Month back in 1984 and made the third Sunday in July National Ice Cream Day.

How lucrative is ice cream? The International Dairy Foods Association says the industry does $21 billion in sales annually.

How many licks does it take to finish a cone? Well, according to icecream.com, the average person takes 50 licks to "polish off" their ice cream cone.

How much ice cream do Americans eat? We eat more ice cream than any other nation--we average 48 pints per person annually.

How was the ice cream cone invented? Legend has it that an ice cream vendor at the 1904 World's Fair in St. Louis ran out of bowls to serve his product in and teamed up with a waffle vendor who rolled them into cones.
