Bill Would Restrict Use of Lawn Pesticides at Child Care Centers, Schools, Fields

News from District 38 legislators

A bill, sponsored by state Senator Robert Gordon, which would restrict the use of lawn care pesticides at certain child care centers, schools (public and private) and recreational fields advanced in the senate this week with a second reading Thursday.

The bill, which would be known as the “Safe Playing Fields Act, ” was first introduced in January. It would prohibit the use of lawn care pesticides at these locations except as an emergency response to an immediate threat to human health, as determined by school officials, in consultation with the local health officer, as appropriate.

Amendments from the state Budget and Appropriations Committee would make the bill effective two years after the date of enactment. Also it has been amended to clearly state that a local health officer would be consulted in such process as appropriate.
