LOCAL AU PAIRS OFFER UP SOMETHING SWEET DURING GARAGE & BAKE SALE

(New Milford, NJ) June 26, 2016 – The smells and sounds coming from Anetta S Matias's house in New Milford last Sunday were anything but typical, as 17 Au Pairs, together representing 10 different countries and languages, gathered to share some very sweet cultural traditions native to their home countries. For this group of young people, far from home, the desserts they prepared were more than a cure to occasional home sickness. These international desserts will raise money for children in need.
Bake sale being held around the country as well as the Kids First Garage Sale and Face Painting are three of several Cultural Care Au Pair fundraising initiatives on behalf of Ubuhle Babantwana, an orphanage in South Africa, Casa do Zezinho, a daycare center in Brazil and St. Mary’s, a school in New Orleans. These area au pairs, with the help of Local Childcare Coordinator Anetta S Matias, are doing their part to help sell the cookies and are having fun along the way by painting kids faces and their nails.
“We had a great time on Sunday,” said Matias. “Guests really enjoyed sampling delicious desserts from all over the world and learning about their cultural and personal significances. Many of these recipes have been passed down from one generation to the next.
Guests also bought some toys, books or other stuff for their kids from our garage sale and had their kids's face painted.”
With all proceeds benefiting our overseas partners, the au pairs can return home after their exchange year in the United States with a lasting souvenir and the knowledge that they took part in an important larger cause.
“This is really what the au pair program is all about. It’s more than just childcare, it’s cultural exchange,” said Matias. “Often times our au pairs assimilate so well into our communities, we forget that they come from such interesting and varied backgrounds. On top of raising money for these children, we hope this cookies and cakes introduces families to new cultures and traditions; the same traditions that au pairs currently in our community represent.”
