Rep. Rothman Awarded Top Score on Environmental Protection and Public Safety

League of Conservation Voters gives congressman a 100 percent rating

U.S. Rep. Steve Rothman (D-9) received a 100 percent rating from the League of Conservation Voters (LCV) on its 2010 National Environmental Scorecard.

For 40 years, the National Environmental Scorecard issued by LCV has rated members of Congress on environmental, public health, and energy issues.

“In the face of those who deny climate change or want to revoke the powers of the Environmental Protection Agency to protect human health and the environment, we must fight to improve the quality of our air, water, parks, and all public lands,” Rothman said in a statement. “Furthermore, it is in America’s national security interests to work toward ending our dependence on foreign oil and develop renewable and environmentally sound sources of energy.”

Included in LCV’s score is Rothman’s on July 30, 2010 vote in favor of H.R. 3534—the Consolidated Land, Energy and Aquatic Resources (CLEAR) Act—in light of the disastrous Deepwater Horizon oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico. The act included provisions setting unlimited liability for responsible parties that cause oil spills and was designed to strengthen safety and environmental standards for offshore drilling.  This legislation passed the U.S. House of Representatives by a vote of 209-193.

The League of Conservation Voters 2010 Congressional Scorecard rated each member of Congress with a score based on voting for legislation that impacts the environment. They selected bills that impacted environmental health, public safety, clean energy production, or conservation of our public lands.
