Republican Candidates Compete for District 38 Nominations in Primary Election

Deadline to file petition to run in primary was Monday

The unofficial candidate list is in for District 38 state senate and assembly seats up for election this year.

Current Bergen County Freeholder John Driscoll will run for the Republican nomination for state senate in this district.  The Paramus resident and chairman of the Bergen County Freeholders, will face Michael Agosta of Fair Lawn for the Republican party's nomination and the right to face Democrat incumbent Robert Gordon of Fair Lawn who seeks re-election.

Driscoll, who ran unsuccessfully for the state Assembly in 2007, said he was looking forward to campaigning for the state Legislature again. If elected, he said he would focus on securing more funding for special education and making the state more affordable.

Richard S. Goldberg of Hawthorne and Fernando A. Alonso of Oradell compete with Joseph J. Gant and Scott A. Verrone, both of Hawthorne. Wojciech Siemaszkiewicz of Bergenfield is also in the Republican race.  The winners in June will face incumbent Democratic Assemblywoman Connie Wagner of Paramus who seeks re-election and Timothy Eustace of Maywood.

Eustace was chosen to replace Joan Voss for the state assembly seat. After the recent redistricting Fort Lee, Voss’ hometown was moved to District 37. Voss has stated that she does not wish to challenge her District 37 assembly colleagues or move to another town in District 38 and has instead filed for candidacy for Bergen County Freeholder.

The new District 38 consists of Bergenfield, Fair Lawn, Glen Rock, Hasbrouck Heights, Hawthorne, Lodi, Maywood, New Milford, Oradell, Paramus, River Edge, Rochelle Park and Saddle Brook.
