Three people were killed in separate New Jersey highway cashes on Sunday, according to police. The accidents were among several tragic events that took place in New Jersey this weekend, including an incident involving a man who died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

One person was killed in a multi-car motor vehicle accident on I-78 eastbound on Sunday, police said, while two people were killed in another crash that shut down I-80 westbound lanes.

The I-78 crash happened at 4:55 a.m. on I-78 eastbound at milepost 43.2 in Berkeley Heights, police said. The accident is under investigation, police said.

Parts of I-80 were reopened in Paterson, meanwhile, where the second crash occurred that killed two people, according to authorities.

Troopers responded at 11:13 a.m to the motor vehicle crash involving two vehicles on I-80 westbound at milepost 59.2 in Paterson, police said.

As of 2:05pm, an investigation continued on I-80 westbound. The left and center lanes were closed, according to authorities.

Also, a Barnegat man died Saturday night after accidentally shooting himself while disassembling a firearm, the Ocean County Prosecutor's Office announced Sunday. James Hammer, 46, died from his wounds at about midnight, officials said.
