Ocean City Councilwoman Karen Bergman to Run in Special Election

Bergman was appointed to the vacant seat in October.

Ocean City, NJ -- Ocean City’s newest council member announced she will run in this spring’s special election for the seat she currently occupies.

Karen Bergman, who returned to City Council in October, confirmed on Thursday night she will run in the spring election.

Bergman was unanimously appointed in October to fill the seat left vacant when former Council Vice President Michael Allegretto was appointed by Mayor Jay Gillian as the new Director of Community Services.

At the time she was appointed, it was known she would serve through the spring, when her seat became available for a special election. The winner of the special election will be seated immediately, and will serve until the next regular election for at-large seats in 2018.

She originally served on council from 2008-12, and was Council Vice President from 2010-2012.

The special election is one of five that will take place in Ocean City this year. The four ward seats will also be decided.

Current ward councilmen include Michael DeVlieger (First), Antwan McClellan (Second), Anthony Wilson (Third) and Peter Guinosso (Fourth).

The deadline for a candidate to file a petition to run in the May 10 non-partisan elections is March 7. The last day to register to vote is April 19.
