United Methodist Communities To Hold Open House At New Housing For Seniors In Ocean City

The goal of the new housing is to make life seem more normal for senior citizens coping with frailty and chronic illness.

Ocean City, NJ -- United Methodist Communities is resolving to change the way seniors coping with frailty and chronic illness spend their time.

Saying those seniors typically spend their time in “medically-oriented and sterile surroundings” United Methodist Communities has opened two new health care and one sub-acute household at The Shores in Ocean City.

Each household is home to 18 residents, and features intimate dining rooms, cozy living rooms, and inviting working kitchens, United Methodist Communities said in a release this week.

A community life assistant commented, “In many ways residents have adapted well and love their new bright, colorful and spacious households. Also, the cross-training of all household staff has enhanced teamwork.”

There will be an Open House on Wednesday, Oct. 19, 2 p.m.-4 p.m. at 2201 Bay Avenue in Ocean City.
With a casual drop-in format, the event will feature refreshments, giveaways, and tours.

“While the changes in the physical environment drive the overall culture of how care is provided, that is not quite enough to further endeavors which enhance a life of ‘home.’ It is also driven by the soul of the community,” United Methodist Communities President and CEO Larry Carlson said. “The only thing that should change when people move into our communities is their address.”

The culture change journey began with questions, including, “How do we create home?”

United Methodist Communities began by learning the simple pleasures and preferences of the residents, reflecting their individuality and daily activities.
