Gay Priest Said He Was Fired For Supporting Gay Paramus Catholic Dean

Rev. Warren Hall was terminated for his support of Kate Drumgoole, who was fired, she claims, because she is in a same-sex marriage.

A North Jersey gay priest was fired because he supports a Paramus Catholic High School guidance counselor who was fired when church officials she was in a same-sex marriage.

The Rev. Warren Hall was dismissed as Seton Hall University's director of campus ministry last month by Archbishop John Myers, who said Hall's actions were, "confusing the faithful," The Religion News Service reported.

Hall is now a parochial vicar at The Catholic Community of Saints Peter and Paul, Hoboken Patch reported.

Hall tweeted about the move Wednesday.

"His tenure is ending at the university as director of campus ministry and he is available for another assignment... I think people are misconstruing an awful lot," Archdiocese spokesman Jim Goodness told The Huffington Post. "The church has long taught that every person is to be treated with dignity and respect."

Kate Drumgoole last month filed a lawsuit against Paramus Catholic High School, her alma mater, and the archdiocese, after being fired in January because, she claims, she is married to a woman. She said the firing was a violation of discrimination laws and was done to inflict emotional distress.

Myers said in a statement Wednesday that marriage in the Catholic faith is, "between a man and a woman," and same-sex marriage runs counter to Catholic teachings, Meyers said.

The archdiocese said it was within its rights to fire Drumgoole, 33, because her lifestyle runs counter to Catholic teachings.

Nearly 4,000 alumni, from every graduating class in the school's 50-year history, have signed an open letter to the school's administrators, demanding the school apologize for firing Drumgoole.
