WEATHER UPDATE: Speed Restrictions, Accidents, Schools Close As Sleet, Ice, Snow Soak New Jersey

A wintry hazardous mix of precipitation is expected to last into Monday night, the National Weather Service says.

Expect a wet, slick and Monday morning commute - and, maybe, a snowy afternoon drive home.

Throw in some possible airline delays, too, and Monday’s storm could make for a mess of things in New Jersey.

A wintry hazardous mix of precipitation has hit New Jersey Monday, and it’s expected to last until the evening, according to the National Weather Service.

It will bring more ice, then a little snow to the northern Mid Atlantic states - such as New Jersey and Pennsylvania - through Monday night.

The National Weather Service has issued a ”Winter Weather Advisory,” an alert for freezing rain, sleet and snow that’s in effect from Monday at 6 a.m. to Tuesday at 6 a.m.

The worst could happen at Monday night at 10 p.m. (see NWS map photo), where almost the entire state is expected to either have snow or some wintry mix.

Already, the following was imposed/occurred:

  • An accident on I-495 eastbound approaching Pleasant Avenue in Weehawken. Left lane closed.
  • Overturned vehicle on Route 440 in both directions north of Kennedy Boulevard in Bayonne. All lanes closed.
  • An accident on the Garden State Parkway express lanes southbound South of Exit 109 in Middletown. Right lane blocked
  • An accident on the Garden State Parkway local lanes southbound South of Exit 114 - Red Hill Rd in Holmdel. Right lane blocked.
  • An accident on the New Jersey Turnpike - Hudson County Extension westbound East of Interchange 14 - I-78 in Newark. Left lane blocked.
  • An accident on the New Jersey Turnpike inner roadway northbound north of Exit 7A - I-195 in Robbinsville. Left lane blocked.
  • An accident on the New Jersey Turnpike inner roadway southbound south of Exit 8A in Monroe. Left lane blocked.
  • An accident on the New Jersey Turnpike outer roadway northbound south of Molly Pitcher Service Area in Cranbury. Left lane blocked.
  • A 45-mph speed restriction on the New Jersey Turnpike in both directions from Exit12 in Linden to the George Washington Bridge, and 35 mph from Exit 12 to 7A.
  • Icing on Skyline Drive in both directions between I-287 and Greenwood Lake Turnpike in Oakland. All lanes closed until further notice
  • A 35-mph speed restriction on the Goethals Bridge and the Outerbridge Crossing
  • A 35-mph speed restriction on the Betsy Ross Bridge in both directions between the New Jersey side and Pennsylvania
  • A 45-mph speed restriction on the Garden State Parkway in both directions from Exit 124 in Sayreville to the New York state line
  • An accident on the Palisades Interstate Parkway northbound area of Exit 4 - US 9W. One lane blocked.
  • A vehicle spun out on I-95 southbound at Exit 4 n Hopewell. Left shoulder remains closed.

Also:

  • Rain or drizzle should develop overnight and turn into freezing rain or sleet toward dawn as near freezing temperatures finally arrive from the Northeast, according to the National Weather Service.
  • The periods of mixed freezing rain and sleet should eventually change to snow Monday afternoon or evening, then end by Tuesday morning.
  • Airline and ground-travel delays because of snow or wintry mix are likely from Boston, southward to New York City, and westward on Monday, according to Accuweather.
  • Any ice will make all untreated surfaces quite hazardous.
  • Temperatures will fall into the lower 30s by dawn, remaining there during the day and then falling into the 20s Monday night.
  • Winds will move at 10 to 20 mph, turning north by Monday night.

Crews and property owners already struggling with up to several feet of snow on the ground and on some roofs will need to prepare and make room for additional snow, according to Accuweather.

Enough snow, sleet and freezing rain can fall to make roads slippery around New York City and in New Jersey, especially where the precipitation occurs during the early morning and evening hours, according to Accuweather.
