WATCH: Deer Breaks Into Princeton Home, Becomes Trapped: Police

Police, the Fire Marshal and Animal Control responded to the scene in an attempt to rescue the trapped animal.

PRINCETON, NJ — Princeton residents at a Westcott Road home were startled to find a four-legged intruder in their home on Friday.

But this intruder was no human.

A video posted below captured an incident in which a deer — yes, a deer — made its way into the house on June 15, according to the Princeton Police Department. Police said the deer broke in through the front window and ran down into the basement.

Although the intruder wasn’t human, the residents of the home still locked themselves in another part of the house and called police.

Police responded to the house, along with Fire Marshal Joe Novak and Animal Control Officer Jim Ferry. By the time they arrived, the deer had become trapped in a stairwell. Its escape route was blocked by the basement door.

Ferry and Novak removed the basement door and freed the deer, police said. Once the door removed, the deer raced out of the home.

“The deer apparently sustained some small cuts from the glass and bled some on the stairs,” police said. “But, he seemed to be more scared than injured.”

Police advised residents that should they ever encounter a deer in their home, they should do the same thing the family did in this situation: retreat to a separate room and contact police immediately.

“The deer will be very afraid and you can be seriously injured as it tries to escape confinement,” police warned.

As for the deer, the best advice is to not bust through the window of an unknown home. And if you do, as police advise at the end of the video, don’t forget your keys.
