100-Year-Old Woman Dies In Fire In Bergen County: Prosecutors

A Lodi woman who came from a large family perished in a fire, officials said.

LODI, NJ — A 100-year-old woman has died after suffering injuries in a fire at her Lodi home on Friday, prosecutors said.

The Bergen County Prosecutor’s Office announced Friday night that Judy Reifel passed away.

That morning, at 8:02 a.m., police responded to a fire alarm from the woman's apartment on Rennie Place, in a public housing building.

First responders found her unconscious and in critical condition. She was taken to Hackensack University Medical Center with serious injuries, prosecutors said.

The Bergen County Prosecutor’s Office and Lodi police began investigating the fire.

Friday night, prosecutors said that a preliminary investigation determined that the fire was accidentally set and does not appear suspicious.

Large Family

Obituaries for Reifel's siblings indicate that she came from a large family, including 11 sisters and brothers.

Riefel's mother died in 1996 at age 106.

Prosecutor Mark Musella thanked the Lodi Police Department, the Lodi Volunteer Fire Department, and the Bergen County Sheriff’s Office for their assistance in the investigation.
