8 Bergen County Employees Claim Layoffs Are Political Payback: Report

Layoffs would take effect Dec. 31. The employees say they were targeted because of their political support of a former county executive.

Eight Bergen County employees are trying to block being laid off Dec. 31, arguing that they are being targeted because of their political support of former Republican County Executive Kathleen Donovan.

Attorneys representing filed motions Thursday disputing the employees’ claims that the layoffs are part of a “pattern of political reprisal,” The Record reported.

Lawyers for the employees have claimed that nearly 600 people have been hired since Jan. 1, which they claim shows the layoffs are not really about “economy and efficiency,” the report states.

In statements filed with the court the employees described being marginalized or transferred to positions where they had little or no work to do after Executive James Tedesco took office.

The eight employees are part of 21 who received layoff notices Nov. 1.
