"I, for one, would want my medical researcher to be working because he wants me to be well, not because he wants to get rich."

We have succeeded in making all of our medical workers care about profit, not about patient care ... do not allow for an expansion of Valley Hospital.

Diane Palacios of Ridgewood wrote that line in a letter to The Bergen Record about how DNA should not be patentable.

Unfortunately, using social Darwinism, we have succeeded in making all of our medical workers care about profit, not about patient care.  Third party payments, allowing them to tell us the bill AFTER the service, forcing insurance companies to cover quackery, having medical schools mistreat their students, allowing the medical workers to run our politicians - all of that and more have created a monster industry in our country that does us little good in exchange for 18% of our hard earned dollars and lots of waste of our patient time.  See http://www.northjersey.com/news/opinions/healthcare_062313.html for an article in today's Record.

What can we do about it?  Think globaly and act locally.  Do not allow for an expansion of Valley Hospital.  They will only take more of our monies and deliver the same mostly unnecessary care.
