Summer Must Haves for Men

Since 1974, Sal Lauretta for Men has been creating custom-fitted men's clothing in the classic European tradition.

So, you’ve chosen your perfect work attire, and you look great. However, winter is over and as the sun starts to shine more, you’re going to start dreaming up summer vacation plans. When the boardwalk beckons with its fried treats, rides, and soft beaches, it’s time to set aside dress shirts and suits. However, there’s no need for you to look like a slob in a grubby t-shirt and faded swim trunks. With a few essential items, you can look your best while still being casual. Here’s what you need to create your summer style:

Shirts: One of the most important items in your summer wardrobe is the short-sleeved shirt. A different style will change your entire look. For a simple, classic look, all you need is a plain white t-shirt. Pair it with dark-washed jeans. If you want a little more color, try a tee with horizontal stripes. For a more formal appearance, a polo shirt may suit you better. If your polo shirt is a solid color, you can pair it with patterned shorts. Finally, a cotton or linen button-down dress shirt is comfortable and airy. Make sure it’s not too formal – after all, it’s probably going to get splashed with saltwater. Choose either a solid color or pinstripes to pair with shorts or jeans.

Sandals: Your feet are trapped in dress shoes all day, so summer is the time to let them free. Flip-flops are one of the most popular styles of summer footwear. Consider investing in a more sturdy leather pair.

Swim Trunks: If you have a brightly patterned swimsuit, you’re a little behind the times. These days, pattern are usually reserved for board shorts, and solid colors are more common in swim trunks. If that’s too plain for you, choose a style that combines two or three complementary colors.

Sunglasses: Sunglasses are one accessory that you won’t want to forget. There are countless styles, so try each one and pick the one that makes you look and feel awesome. Try on a pair of aviators. Have you considered rimless sunglasses? They look stylish without being too obtrusive. Choose your size and color, but keep in mind that bigger will help block more sun. If you want to try them for fun, get a cheaper pair, but if you want them to last, splurge on a designer pair.
