Residents should clear three feet around so firefighters can quickly access to hydrants during an emergency.

GLEN ROCK - Fire departments throughout Bergen County are urging residents to clear fire hydrants in front of their homes of snow this weekend.

Residents should clear hydrants and three feet around them of ice and snow so firefighters can easily access them during an emergency. Firefighters do not want to waste valuable time clearing fire hydrants of snow during an emergency.

Many municipalities have laws requiring residents to clear hydrants or be fined if they are not. Most of the ordinances require hydrants be clear within 24 hours of a snowstorm.
