Help your child through his/her geometry class

Out of all the different disciplines in mathematics for the high school students, I believe most students struggle with geometry compared to algebra, statistics or even calculus.  The major reason why the students struggle with geometry is the simple fact that the students are asked to do proofs in the first months of their geometry class.  Never before had the students been asked to do anything similar to this type of proofs.  Most students can handle working on a problem and eventually come up with a solution (e.g. x = -10).  But if you ask the students to proof that triangle A is congruent to triangle B, most students have a difficult time remembering how to use various theorems and postulates to proof the identical triangles.  The typical answer that a struggling geometry student will provide is "it just looks like they are congruent, who cares about proving it?".

After the initial months of doing proofs, the geometry program should get relatively easier as most geometry program will not require the students to do additional proofs for future lessons.  It is my opinion that in order for the students to be successful in geometry, they will need to do more problems so that they become familiar the various types of proofs.  The students have to become so well versed in the various types of proofs that the theorems and postulates become second nature to them.  If you can get the students to get past the initial months of geometry program, they should find the rest of the geometry program easier to follow.
