Ridgewood Family Hopes To Strike Out Cancer With Wiffleball Tournament

The annual Wiffle for Cancer tournament in memory of Nick Currey is Sunday.

Correction: An earlier version of this story reported that the tournament would be held Saturday. it is being held Sunday.

RIDGEWOOD, N.J. — Nick Currey was upbeat and charismatic. The 2004 Ridgewood High School alumnus died of Ewing Sarcoma, a type of bone cancer, in November 2005. He was 19.

“I miss him everyday. Maybe it’s gotten a little better over the years, but I still miss him,” Ralph Currey said. “That feeling of missing him never really goes away.”

Curry’s family founded the Nick Currey Fund. All proceeds from the tournament, now in its 12th year, will be put into the fund and donated to help fund what hopes to be a cutting-edge treatment project out of the University of Utah.

The tournament has raised more than $155,000 since it was first held 12 years ago.

The fund has received more than $1 million in donations.

“We’re focused totally on funding research. If you look at it, the treatment hasn’t changed in 40 years. It’s basically chemotherapy, surgery, and radiation,” Ralph Currey said. “The project we’re funding would provide a much more targeted therapy.”

The tournament features two divisions: One for competitive players and another who want a more casual experience. Teams in each division will be grouped into four-member brackets. Each team will play their divisional opponents and the top teams will advance to a single-elimination championship round.

Teams of three to five players are welcome to sign up for the tournament Sunday. Registration costs $50.
