Ridgewood Pond Stocked With Mosquito-Eating Fish

Gambusia fish eat mosquito larvae. The stocking was part of the Bergen Bites Back program to prevent the spread of mosquito-borne illnesses.

RIDGEWOOD, N.J. — A village pond has been stocked with mosquito-eating fish as part of a program to prevent the spread of mosquito-borne illnesses in the county.

Bergen County Mosquito Control stocked Twinney Park with Gambusia fish recently. The fish feed on mosquito larvae. The fish, along with regular spraying of standing water, are being used in tandem to control the mosquito population and prevent mosquito-borne illnesses, including the Zika virus, in a campaign called Bergen Bites Back.

Warren Staudinger, a Mosquito Control staff member, said the county plans on releasing more fish in the park soon.

Staudinger also said that officials would like to put fish in swimming pools on foreclosed properties as part of the campaign.

The fish were released in a Wyckoff pond last month.
