Well, the season is upon us. The Holiday Cheer, Office Parties, Get Togethers with friends...Back and Shoulder Injuries. I can't tell you how many times I hear about people hurt their shoulders and especially their backs while shoveling snow.
Here is the scenario. It's the first snow of the year. Mr. Jones sees the fluffy white stuff pile up, he decides this will be his "workout" for the day. Except he doesn't treat it like a workout. He simply straps on his boots, puts on his jacket, hat and gloves, grabs his shovel and heads out. He begins to dig in. What didn't he do? He didn't warm up. Theres the "rub". He soon discovers that this "fluffy white stuff" is not so fluffy. He also shortly discovers mounting pain in his low back. I don't care how many push-ups you do or how long you are on the treadmill, you don't pick up a shovel and hoist heavy, semi-solid material several feet in the air time after time on a regular basis.
This is the same guy who would even think about doing a heavy workout without the proper warm-up. Why wouldn't you do one now? Take the extra 10 to 15 minutes and warm your body up, especially the shoulders and back. A little mobility work wouldn't be a bad idea either.
Enjoy the winter season, but exercise proper preparation when engaging in strenuous physical activity.
