Uncertainty Looms As Six A And P-Owned Locations Remain Unsold, Report Says

Stores in Bergen and Passaic counties have not been bid on after dozens of others have been sold or shut down.

The Ramsey Pathmark is one of six North Jersey locations that has yet to pick up a bidder months after the Great Atlantic & Pacific Tea Co. filed for bankruptcy protection in July.

The Montvale-based Great Atlantic & Pacific Tea Company Inc., which owns A&P, Pathmark, Superfresh, Food Emporium, and Food Basics, filed for bankruptcy July 19 and closed 25 stores in September. The company been trying to find buyers for the rest of its stores, going through multiple rounds of auctions for them, but getting no bids.

The A&P stores in Wayne, Pompton Lakes, West Milford, and Woodland Park, along with Pathmarks in Ramsey and Hackensack, are likely to close, putting 500 people out of a job, The Record reported.

The Wayne store in particular has a lot of competition thanks to an ShopRite and two Stop & Shops, one in Wayne and another nearby on Route 23 in Pompton Plains.

Delmy Hernandez, an immigrant from El Salvador, told The Record that she has “little hope” in finding work at another store.
