UPDATE: Police Officer Shot In Bergen Following Multi-State Car Chase

A Passaic man led police from several agencies on an early morning chase throughout Passaic and Bergen counties, authorities said.

Three Passaic County residents were arrested after police were shot at following an early morning pursuit through several North Jersey municipalities that ended in northeast Bergen County, Palisades Interstate Park Police (PIP) reported.

PIP police heard on communications channels about a vehicle pursuit in Passaic at 4 a.m. Tuesday, authorities said.

Several police agencies pursued a 2014 Dodge Charger as it crossed the George Washington Bridge into Manhattan and returned across the upper level back into New Jersey and onto the Palisades Interstate Parkway, police said.

The vehicle turned off its headlines as officers from the Port Authority Police Department pursued the car as it cut through the Alpine Lookout.

The driver, Durell Jackson, 21, of Passaic, jumped out of the car and was run over by a back wheel when it crossed over the median; the man rolled under the guardrail and ran, police said. An officer ran after the man while three others arrested the two passengers.

While running after Jackson on the parkway and Route 9W, the officer saw him run towards him with a “shiny type object” in his hand; the officer fired one shot at Jackson, which missed him, police said.

Jackson was apprehended after other police officers joined the pursuit and caught up with the man near homes. He allegedly threw several bags of marijuana into the woods, which police later found, authorities said.

Jackson sustained minor injuries; both he and the officer were transported to Englewood Hospital and Medical Center, police said.

Jackson had multiple criminal warrants out for his arrest, including one out of Passaic for eluding.

Jackson was charged with eluding by vehicle, eluding by foot, resisting arrest, receiving stolen property, destruction of evidence and several disorderly persons offenses. Multiple motor vehicle charges against him are also pending. Police did not release Jackson’s bail information.

One passenger, Patrice L. Ervin, 21, of Passaic, was charged with riding in a vehicle taken without permission and giving false information to police, both fourth-degree crimes. Her bail was set at $12,000 with no 10 percent option.

The other passenger, Nijah K. Cason, 19, from Passaic, was charged with riding in a vehicle taken without permission. Her bail was set at $5,000 with no 10 percent option.
