Take a Walk on the River Edge Side

Many people are attracted to River Edge because of its natural spaces. In addition to sharing Van Saun Park with Paramus, River Edge has Historic New Bridge Landing, Kenneth B. George Park, Brookside Park, and Memorial Park.

Historic New Bridge Landing is located on the southern end of River Edge at the corner of Main Street and Hackensack Avenue It is named after the "New Bridge" which was built in 1745. This wooden structure was replaced with an iron swing bridge which opened to traffic in 1889. Today, the iron swing bridge is open only to pedestrian traffic. From the bridge, residents can enjoy a picturesque view of the Hackensack River.

Historic New Bridge Landing includes a few historic buildings. The Steuben House was built on this site during colonial times. The rest of the buildings were moved to the site a few decades ago. Residents can admire the Demarest House, the Westervelt-Thomas Barn, the Campbell-Christie House, and an out kitchen. There are plans to build a new museum on the site too.

Kenneth B. George Park is at the end of Tenney Avenue along the Hackensack River. It has a boat launch for those who want to boat on the Hackensack River. The  sports field there can accommodate soccer, football, and baseball. A field house is located on one end of the field and a shooting range is on the other end of the field.

Oak Ave is an unpaved, grassy strip of land from Kensington Road until a bit pass Jefferson Avenue. Brookside Park is a pocket park along this part of Oak Avenue. It features a meandering bicycle path, a playground for small children, and two basketball courts.

Memorial Park is in the center of River Edge, starting with the Library property and ending a bit before Wales Avenue. The Library property has the River Edge Arboretum and the River Edge 9/11 Memorial. This memorial honors Christopher Allingham, Todd Ouida, Jennifer Louise Fialko, Scott W. Rohner, and Bonseok Koo, the River Edge residents who died on 9/11. A memorial to the River Edge military personnel who died in service is near the opposite corner of the Library.

Memorial Park has recreational facilities for many sports. Residents can play tennis, horse shoes, racket ball, basket ball, hockey, and baseball there. A concession stand and picnic areas with grills are there for people who want to buy a hot dog or grill one themselves. The large playground in the middle of Memorial Park has equipment for young children.

River Edge is a green suburb with many parks. Residents can reflect on past losses, learn history, and play at Historic New Bridge Landing, Kenneth B. George Park, Brookside Park, and Memorial Park. Visiting these parks is a peaceful way to spend a weekend afternoon.
