HOLY CROSS SCHOOL TEAM PLACES SECOND IN REGIONAL STOCK MARKET GAME

Students to be Honored at Awards Ceremony

RUMSON, NJ—Holy Cross Seventh Grade students, Will Sullivan and Dennis Palmeri, both of Rumson, parlayed stocks that impact their daily lives into a successful portfolio that earned them a Second Place finish in the Southern Middle School Division of The Stock Market Game Spring Session in which 147 teams participated. The Awards Ceremony, hosted by the SIFMA Foundation and the Securities Industry and Financial Markets Association, will take place at Stockton University on May 26.

“We picked what we liked,” commented Palmeri. “I own a GoPro camera, subscribe to Netflix, and wear a lot of Nike.” Sullivan was inspired by all the charging stations he saw while traveling with this family and thought checking out Tesla would be a good idea. He even tried Starbucks Coffee. The boys researched those companies and thought each was a good choice for the 10-week contest.

The Stock Market Game, an educational program of the SIMFA Foundation, is an on-line simulation of the global capital markets. Each student team begins with a hypothetical $100,000 that the team virtually invests in real stocks, in real time with real results. The intent is to promote an understanding of economics, investing, and personal finance.

“The hardest part was learning about stocks and shares,” reported Sullivan. “Mrs. Chadwick helped us learn what we needed to know to buy and sell,” explained Palmeri of their Math Teacher who encouraged her students to enter the game as a class project. “They had to research and evaluate each company,” said Chadwick, “And they had to make a portfolio to track how each company was doing.” Sullivan and Palmeri were surprised that they did so well for first-time investors and game participants. They learned a lot and both agreed “it was fun.”

More than 600,000 students take part in The Stock Market Game every school year across all 50 states. The game has reached 15 million students since its inception in 1977.
