Peach Buzz!

"James and the Giant Peach" Comes to Terrill Middle School

A sad boy, two evil aunts, a coterie of insects, and one enormous peach take to the stage in Terrill Middle School’s spring musical, “James and the Giant Peach.” First staged at Connecticut’s famous Goodspeed Musicals, it is a story of courage, spirit, and - above all - friendship, as James escapes the clutches of the malevolent Spiker and Sponge, and finds a “just peachy” home with a grasshopper, ladybug, earthworm, spider, and centipede.

For one weekend, more than 65 students will sing, dance, and sail away in a sea-worthy fruit, delighting audiences young and old. Directed by Amanda Salcedo and Kale Thompson (“Alice in Wonderland,” “Beauty and the Beast,” “Hairspray”), choreographed by Stephanie Spychalski (“Hairspray”), and run by an all-student stage crew, this obscure musical is exactly what the veteran show-people wanted for this latest season.

“We picked James and the Giant Peach because it was both whimsical and unique,” says Salcedo. “Not many schools have done a production like this, and because the TMS is in its 5th production, we wanted to challenge ourselves on all levels of music, dancing, acting and choreography. It is great for younger audiences because this book is a favorite amongst both elementary teachers and students, and Dahl has a way of making a fantasy story have realistic qualities that almost suck you right into the story!”
