Resisting the Spell: How Jane Austen Redefines Beauty

Join us at the Scotch Plains Public Library and discover the wit, wisdom, and subtle rebellion of Jane Austen.

(Connie Pinkowski)

Join us at the Scotch Plains Public Library on Wednesday, August 27, 2025 at 7:00pm for an interesting and informative talk on how Austen’s world mirrors our own, where “pretty privilege” can open doors, but true merit lies elsewhere. Her novels invite us to question why we value beauty, and whether we can—or should—resist its allure. We will also delve into how Austen’s heroines are portrayed in film and television.

Discover the wit, wisdom, and subtle rebellion of Jane Austen in a talk that explores how her beloved novels challenge the power of physical beauty. Presented by Kenneth L. Brewer, a Visiting Professor in Writing Studies and English at Montclair State University.

Please log in with your library card number and PIN to reserve your place at this event. You may also register as a guest with your email, or by phone or at the Library.
