Scotch Plains Tax Bills Delayed Again as Residents Face Major 2026 Increases;

By Romel D'Munda, Community Contributor

Scotch Plains residents are once again dealing with delays in the release of the 2026 property tax bills, even as households brace for one of the largest combined tax increases in recent township history. While the Union County Board of Taxation has not yet certified the final tax rate, many residents are questioning why the process has become so strained — and whether local budgeting decisions have contributed to the problem.

A Year Defined by Rising Costs and Administrative Slowdowns

The 2026 tax bill delay comes during a year marked by significant spending increases across multiple levels of government. Residents are facing higher municipal taxes, a substantial school budget increase, county levy adjustments, and a larger library tax. When all of these increases hit at once, the system becomes more sensitive to administrative missteps and budget overruns.

Spending Decisions That Raised Concerns

Several budget choices made over the past year have raised questions among residents:

  • The 6.1% school budget increase, driven largely by rising healthcare costs
  • A municipal budget that grew by more than $2 million
  • Additional levy increases layered on top of existing obligations
  • A revaluation process that has taken longer than expected and added complexity

While each component has its own justification, the cumulative effect has been higher taxes, slower processing, and more uncertainty for homeowners.

Where the Process Broke Down

Although the county is responsible for certifying the final tax rate, the township’s budgeting and spending decisions directly influence how quickly and smoothly that certification can occur. When budgets expand rapidly or require multiple rounds of adjustments, it creates delays that ripple through the entire tax process.

Residents are left waiting — without clear communication — for bills that will ultimately be hundreds of dollars higher than the prior year.

Community Impact

The frustration is real. Many residents feel that the combination of rising spending, administrative delays, and limited transparency has made it harder to plan household finances. Others worry that the revaluation will compound the issue in 2027.

My Perspective as a Resident and Candidate

As someone running for Township Council 2026, I believe residents deserve a clearer explanation of how these delays happen — and how responsible budgeting can prevent them. My focus is on:

  • Transparency in how tax dollars are allocated
  • Accountability when spending increases outpace planning
  • Better communication with residents when delays occur
  • Ensuring future budgets are sustainable and predictable

I will continue attending meetings, reviewing budget documents, and sharing factual updates so residents can understand how decisions made today affect their tax bills tomorrow.

Staying Informed

Residents can follow official updates through:

  • The Township of Scotch Plains website
  • The Union County Board of Taxation
  • The Scotch Plains–Fanwood Board of Education

I encourage everyone to stay engaged as the final 2026 tax rate is certified.
