Monmouth Junction Evolves in the 1900's

Part three of a three-part column.

Twelve small schools had already been built in South Brunswick before Monmouth Junction constructed its first. Monmouth Junction's first school was built in 1888 on old Ridge Road, across the tracks and near the railroad bridge.

The school stayed open until 1902, when a two story school was built on New Road, known as the New Road School. The current school on Ridge Road was constructed in 1950.

The Volunteer Fire Department was formed in 1924, and a years later the Volunteer First Aid Squad was formed in 1940. The First Aid Squad purchased the 1902 school building to house equipment and vehicles.

Monmouth Junction had become a favorite train stop for salesmen, travelers, vacationers and revelers, thanks in part to the Monmouth House Hotel. Even visitors to Princeton University spent time visiting the area.

The village had three churches in 1914 including, St. Cecelia’s Catholic Church, St. Paul’s Episcopal Church and Miller Memorial Presbyterian Church.  Miller Memorial moved into the St. Paul’s location in the 1930’s after St. Paul’s was abandoned.

In the 1980’s St. Cecelia’s burned and a new church was built. The last village created in South Brunswick today is home to South Brunswick High School, two middle schools, the Police and Municipal buildings and the Senior Center. Monmouth Junction has become an important piece in the town’s landscape.
