SOUTH BRUNSWICK, NJ — Provided by organizers of the march, here are some photos of the Black Lives Matter march held outside South Brunswick High School on June 12.

The march was organized by two recent South Brunswick High grads, Essence Baker and Jada-Rae Poku. There was a second BLM march, at Woodlot Park this past Saturday, June 20; that was organized by current students at North and South Brunswick high schools.

Poku estimated about 700-800 people attended, but some news reports put the crowd as high as 1,000. The event was not marred by a freak accident that occurred when a deer ran out from the high school property and collided with protesters shortly after the march began; one marcher, a woman in her 60s, was seriously injured and had to be hospitalized.

Speakers at the march included Jewish Cantor Bruce Rockman, New Jersey Assemblyman Andrew Zwicker (a Democrat who represents this area in Trenton), South Brunswick schools superintendent Scott Feder, former South Brunswick Board of Education member Azra Baig and Edwin Lloyd, a local Christian pastor.

"We were overwhelmed with the amount of support we received from the South Brunswick community!" said Poku. "Our marchers were all ages, old and young; we had a beautiful diverse crowd. Many people slowed down to honk horns as we marched up Rt. 522 and people stood outside their doorsteps with signs showing support and joined in the march as we passed their homes."

"They gave very powerful and inspiring messages about the importance of diversity, inclusion and acceptance," said Poku. "They also stressed the importance of voting as we had voter's registration and census paperwork in different languages."

There was a moment of silence for lives lost.

"We plan to continue with efforts that will unite and educate our community," said Poku.
