Police Release Name of Cabbie Killed in Crash on Sunday in Middlesex County

Woodbridge police say Manuel Gonzalez-Diaz of Perth Amboy died from injuries suffered in the accident at Route 1 and Green Street.

Woodbridge police have released the name of the taxi driver killed in a two-vehicle crash on Route 1 north this weekend.

Manuel Gonzalez-Diaz, 31, of Perth Amboy, died Sunday at an area hospital, police said.

He was driving a cab, owned by Keyport Yellow Taxi, on Route 1 north Sunday, said Sgt. Eric Nelson.

Around 11:45 a.m., near Green Street, the cab collided with a Jeep Cherokee, also heading northbound on the highway, said Nelson.

The taxi then hit two utility poles and a traffic light stanchion, while the Jeep spun out and came to rest in the Dunkin’ Donuts parking lot, the sergeant said.

The woman driving the Jeep and her passenger suffered minor injuries.

The cause of the accident is still under investigation, but neither alcohol nor drugs are believed to be a factor, said Nelson.
