Protest Planned for South Brunswick Board of Education Meeting Monday Night

The statewide teachers' union is expected to show support for South Brunswick teachers, as clashing escalates in South Brunswick schools.

South Brunswick, NJ - At the upcoming South Brunswick Board of Education meeting, on Monday, May 9, there will be a protest of South Brunswick teachers and representatives from the statewide teachers' union, the New Jersey Education Association.

John Lolli, president of the South Brunswick union, the South Brunswick Education Association, said he is expecting quite a large crowd Monday night, "at least over 100 people, maybe more," he told Patch. Lolli is also an AP economics teacher at South Brunswick High School

As Patch has reported, there is significant fighting between the district administration and the teachers' union, with the union having filed four separate grievances against the school district and superintendent Dr. Jerry Jellig. Two of those grievances have now entered arbitration and may head to court if they cannot be resolved.

In light of the escalating tension, the school district was originally considering holding Monday night's meeting at the high school, to accommodate a larger crowd. However, the meeting will remain at Crossroads North middle school, as scheduled.

The Board of Ed. meeting will start at 5:30 p.m. for an unusually long closed-doors, executive session, lasting until 7:30. The public and the media is not privy to an executive session of the board. The regular public meeting will resume at 7:30 p.m. Monday.

The protest rally will be held outdoors, between Pierre's restaurant and Crossroads North middle school, beginning at 6:15 p.m., Lolli said.

Lolli will also be testifying at the Monday night meeting, where he will speak about "budget issues in terms of academics for next year's budget," he said.
